Introduction The advent of transrectal ultrasonography has dramatically improved the ability of veterinarians to accurately diagnose and manage twin pregnancies in mares. As such the incidence of abortion due to twin pregnancy in mares has declined over the past 10 to 20 years [1]. In spite of the improved accuracy of detection and management of twin pregnancies in the mare associated with transrectal ultrasonography, twin pregnancies are occasionally not diagnosed until after the formation of endometrial cups at approximately 35 to 40 days of gestation.
